The Process of Removing a Tooth

First and foremost, we’ll ensure your comfort during tooth extraction. Dr. Yarnell is highly trained in administering anesthetics; no matter which option is best for you, you’ll be in good hands. After that, there are actually two types of extraction we might perform, depending on your situation.

  • A simple extraction is generally for teeth that are fully grown. Most of the time we can simply loosen it and gently tug it out of place.
  • Surgical extractions are for more complicated pearly whites that are trapped in your gums. We most commonly see this with wisdom teeth. To reach the submersed captive, we’ll have to remove some of your oral tissue, and will likely separate the tooth into multiple pieces for smoother extraction.

Tooth extractions don’t usually take very long to complete. In some cases, patients are free to go before they’ve even realized their tooth is gone!

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

We’ll be sure to give you detailed aftercare instructions before you leave, but in general, this is what you should do during your recovery:

  • Take over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers consistently and as directed.
  • Avoid eating foods that could harm your treatment site or your stitches, such as hard, crunchy, and spicy foods, as well as any and all tobacco products.
  • Stay hydrated, but don’t use a straw. This could dislodge the vital blood clot protecting your treatment site from infection and severe sensitivity.
  • Continue to brush and floss the treatment site but do so carefully.
  • Don’t engage in strenuous physical activity.
  • Instead, get plenty of rest and try to relax! Sleep and comfort are just as important for the healing process as care and medicine.

Even after you receive more thorough directions, don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions or concerns during your recovery. Woodsprings Family Dentistry is here for all your oral health needs!
